S. S. Lazio: True Italian Team?
It has been a while since we say S. S. Lazio – or simply Lazio – accomplish great things internationally. Still, this team still holds the reputation of being one of the most Italian team in the Serie A. To test that reputation, we are going to take a look at Lazio’s top players of all time based on number of appearances and goals.
When seen based on number of appearances with the team, the 5th best player Lazio ever had goes to Luca Marchegiani. The Italian footballer performed in 339 matches for Lazio. Marchegiani is just under Aldo Puccinelli who is in fourth place with 342 appearances. Next, we have Paolo Negro with 376 appearances for Lazio; yes, Negro is also an Italian footballer. From the name, we can tell that the footballer holding the second most appearances record in Lazio’s history, Giuseppe Wilson, is an Italian as well. Another famous Italian footballer, Giuseppe Fivalli, is topping the list with 401 appearances.
Based on the number of goals scored for Lazio, Silvio Piola is holding the record of most goals with 148 goals in total. He is also known as one of the best strikers in Italy’s national team history. Giuseppe Signori is following closely with 127 goals for Lazio, while another Italian footballer Giorgio Chinaglia is just 4 goals short from Signori.
Although Lazio’s today’s squad has less Italians in it, the team maintained a long history of true Italian football indeed. It is up to Edoardo Reja, Lazio’s current manager, to uphold the tradition.
